SCREEN Becomes First in Semiconductor Production Equipment Industry to Introduce zeroboard Service for Profiling CO₂ Emissions
August 31, 2022
Kyoto, Japan—August 31, 2022—SCREEN Semiconductor Solutions Co., Ltd. (SCREEN) has introduced zeroboard, a cloud-based service for calculating and visualizing greenhouse gas emissions developed by Zeroboard Inc. (Zeroboard) and marketed and distributed by NAGASE & CO., LTD. (NAGASE). SCREEN is the first in the semiconductor production equipment industry to adopt zeroboard and expects the service to significantly accelerate its efforts to reduce environmental impact. The company is currently working to create profiles for the CO₂ emissions of each of its products and services, supported by NAGASE’s expertise in calculating these outputs.
SCREEN undertakes a range of life cycle assessments (LCA) as part of its efforts to develop products and services that contribute to the realization of a sustainable society by reducing environmental impact. As well as mitigating the effects of its business activities on climate change and helping to preserve biodiversity, the company is committed to the effective utilization of water and resource recovery from used products and components.
NAGASE, SCREEN’s partner in this initiative, is a multi-faceted corporate group with R&D and manufacturing capabilities that also maintains trading operations. To help bring about a low-carbon society, NAGASE is focusing on Scope 3* reductions, an area of particular importance to semiconductor-related manufacturers, while also working to decrease energy use during equipment operation and support lower chemical consumption and waste liquid output.
Going forward, SCREEN and NAGASE will work together to visualize the CO₂ emissions of each of SCREEN’s products and services. In this major undertaking, NAGASE will provide tailored solutions that utilize the zeroboard cloud-based visualization service. It will also be able to offer invaluable expertise it has developed in the chemical industry as well as calculation know-how that capitalizes on its own extensive network of semiconductor-related businesses, ranging from materials to production equipment.
SCREEN plans to use the detailed CO₂ emission data gained from the introduction of zeroboard and calculation support provided by NAGASE to develop semiconductor production systems, particularly cleaning systems and coater/developers, that are more responsive to ecological requirements and will provide the industry with cutting-edge environmental performance. As a leading company in the cleaning equipment field, it remains fully committed to supporting the continuing development of the semiconductor industry.
SCREEN will also benefit from NAGASE’s ongoing work with its development partner Zeroboard to provide emission calculation and reduction support to primarily the chemical industry. This collaboration with SCREEN is expected to accelerate NAGASE’s ability to provide support within the semiconductor supply chain, where the calculation of LCA values usually presents considerable difficulties. Advances in this area will also contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society.
*Scope 3 covers greenhouse gases (CO₂, etc.) produced by third parties connected to the activities of a business entity. These emissions are not included in Scope 1 or 2, which include outputs produced by the business itself. The categories are defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, an organization that establishes comprehensive global standardized frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas emissions.
